An affidavit of support (form I-134) is used to show that visa applicants have sponsorship and will not become public charges while in the United States. This form is provided in support of U.S. non-immigrant visa applicant(s) or a lawful permanent resident(s) who qualifies as a returning resident (SB1).
A new version of form I-134 (version: 11/30/16) was introduced in late 2016. This eight-page document replaces the two-page form I-134. The new form I-134 seeks more detailed information about the sponsor and the beneficiary and their dependents. A separate form is needed for each visa applicant. The form I-134 does not have to be notarized and is valid with just the signature of the sponsor. This new version for form I-134 is very similar to the form I-864 (which is required for most family-based immigrants and some employment-based immigrants to show that they have adequate means of financial support and are not likely to rely on the U.S. government for financial support).
Starting February 27, 2017, previous versions of form I-134 will not be accepted. Sponsors should remember to use the latest version if the visa applicant(s) plans to appear for an interview on or after February 27, 2017.
