In general, a non-applying relative or guardian cannot accompany the nonimmigrant visa applicant(s) into a U.S. consulate or embassy in India. However, there may be instances where the applicant is unable to attend the visa interview alone due to medical inability. If the non-applying relative or guardian’s presence is required, s/he must contact the respective consular post for permission to accompany the nonimmigrant visa applicant. One should note, that the request can be made only after scheduling the visa interview. Based on the circumstances, the consular post may, at its discretion, allow the non-applying relative or guardian to accompany the visa applicant(s).
Aged applicants or applicants requiring wheelchair assistance should not expect the consular post to permit a non-applying relative or guardian to accompany them, as the consulate has in-house personnel to provide this assistance.
Additionally, nonimmigrant visa applicants below 14 and above the age of 80 are not required to appear in person for a visa interview unless s/he has a prior visa refusal.
We at Murthy Immigration Services have helped applicants with special needs or a non-applying relative or guardian to accompany the applicant successfully over the years
