Procedure to Collect Passport (Visa) From U.S. Embassy / Consulate(s) in India

Visitors to MurthyIndiaDotCom and other U.S. Visa applicants in India may already be aware that after a successful visa interview, the visa applicant or his/ her representative can collect the passport (Visa) from one of the 33 Stanley/Blue Dart passport collection locations (which includes 11 Visa Application Centers and 22 Blue Dart locations) as chosen by them at the time of scheduling the visa appointment. The passports are available for 14 calendar days at the 11 Visa Application Centers and for 7 working days from the 22 Blue Dart locations.

A common question we receive is, what happens if the applicant is unable to pick up the passport (visa) before the stipulated time?

If the applicant is unable to pick up the passport during this period, the passports are returned to the respective U.S. Embassy / Consulate. The applicant will then have to pick up the passport directly from the Embassy / Consulate. The table below clearly explains the procedure to pick up the returned passport (visa) from each of the 5 consular posts in India:

Hyderabad

Returned passports can be picked up only on the third Wednesday of the month. One needs to emailHydCEA@state.gov requesting for an appointment indicating the following:

·         DS-160 barcode number

·         Passport number

·         Subject line – “Passport Collection at U.S. Consulate General, Hyderabad”

14:00 hours to 16:00 hours

Chennai

Monday to Friday (appointment not required) 12:00 hours to 13:00 hours

Kolkata

Only on Tuesdays (appointment not required) 14:30 hours to 15:00 Hours

Mumbai

Monday to Friday (appointment not required) Non-Immigrant Visa : 12:00 hours to 12:15 hours
Immigrant Visa: 07:30 hours to 08:30 hours

Delhi

Only on Tuesdays (appointment not required) Non Immigrant and Immigrant Visa: 14:00 hours to 15:00 hours

Supporting Documents required for collection of returned passport (visa):

  • Applicant’s original government-issued photo identification
  • In case of representative, original authorization letter from applicant along with the representative’s original government-issued photo identification
  • In case of collect from the American Consulate General at Hyderabad, a print out of the email from HydCEA@state.gov confirming the appointment
